Keyless entry install

12 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, just finished swapping my regular door handle for a keyless entry door handle figured I'd show the process if anyone was interested in this swap.

Picked up this unit from a 2000's expedition for FREE! my yard charges me entree and normally doesn't charge me unless it's a big part.

This is the handle as I got it

This is the finished handle after completely disassembling the key pad and wetsanding and polishing the plastic

the wiring harness for the new handle IS inside the door. It is right behind the speaker on the right hand side of the door. See picture below.
Attachment 548463 as you can see it is capped off. The issue you will run into now is the fact that the female side (capped off plug) is only about 3" long from the main harness. This is an issue because from the handle to the female harness stretches the entire length of the door as you can see from the two green plugs on opposite ends in the picture below.Attachment 548464
To remedy this issue i decided to make a plug and play harness utilizing the donor vehicle wiring harness, this way you do not have to add non factory wires and cut off the quick disconnects. Here is the wiring harness that I made from the donor vehicle Attachment 548465 as you can see I now have plenty of wiring harness.

The final step is to find the preset code for the keyless entry pad. The code is located directly above the brake peddle on the back of a white plastic box you will see 5 numbers. These are the numbers for a keyless entree pad IF installed. Simply type the code in and you're ready to rock.. overall this install took a few hours, mostly spent cleaning up the new door handle. Total cost of this project was $1...!!! Let me know what you guys think!

It's only "that easy" if the connectors are already there. I don't think my '03 has them. (And with the doors sealed up tight with sound deadener, finding out now wouldn't be fun.)

Wait, what? Its pre-wired?? Whoa game changer! I love the keypad on my expedition and I thought this was a difficult retrofit.

The big maybe is that I have an XL (manual windows, manual door locks) so i may not have this pre-wired. But its worth a look

This is awesome!

Can anyone confirm if all of our trucks were pre-wired for this? I'm feeling doubtful that my '97 XL will be...

I'm thinking that power door locks would have to be mandatory for this to work.

I do not know which years and which packages had the plug. Mine is a 2002 XLT. I do know ford was notorious for creating one wiring harness and just tucking all of the unused options in the panels. If you have the plug it will be right above the speaker in the cavity. With the window down you may actually be able to straight down to it.

I know the plug is wired into the main harness for the power locks, powder windows, power mirrors and the door lights, so I would imagine if you have any of those then the harness will have the plug. Also if you have factory power mirrors then you have the two leads for factory blinker mirrors.
