When you an do this in a Chevy 1500 or Ram 1500.... then I might consider changing from Ford. Our so called under-rated 5.4 has max torque (350 ft lbs/>400 n-m) at 2500 rpm. Even the 11th generation f150's with the 5.4 cant say that. I wouldn't trade my 5.4L 2v for a 5.4 3V... Not to mention our 4-speed tranny holds up ALOT better than the 04-09 6-speeds.
Ordered some 6" river rocks for a landscaping project at the house. I decided to only make one trip, so we loaded it down with 3.5-4 tons. 3000lb in the bed, 4000lb on a solid axle(4k 12ft trailer).
My truck has the 5.4 , 3.73, with upgraded leaf springs. I towed the load about 30miles(mainly up-hill) at about at 5-7% grade. Pulling out and on flat surface was fairly easy and did so without reeving over 2.5k . Up the 7% incline I was running around 2.5k-3k rpms at 45 mph. The braking was superb, although once we stopped, I could tell that it had been heating up fairly quick. Could use a good set of vented rotors it hauling a load like this long distances. The terrain around my area is very mountainous, from 2000ft in elevation up to 5500 feet. So I think my "outdated, under powered 5.4" did just fine
I had absolutely no problems hauling this. As you can tell, I exceed the capacity by a few hundred pounds. The 5.4 may not be a speed demon, but with the right rear end; you can haul about anything you can fit on a bed or hook too. Gas mileage was around 7mpg, but consider I have 34" MT's and only average 11 unloaded
Unloaded (not me driving)
