The 4.6 is fine, it's just gutless. It doesn't take bolt ons very well unless your bolt-on is a blower.

For longevity, it can't be beat. For power, it's weak in the knees.

Thanks for all of the input. I just got back from checking out a truck tonight. It was a little rough and a former fleet vehicle for the KY Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, so I think I will probably pass on it. It does have the 3.55 non-limited slip axle.

I will keep looking and will still prefer a 5.4 for the extra power, but thanks to you guys I will also strongly consider a 4.6 if I find one I like.

Regarding the TT, I did some more research and found that the dry weight on it is in fact under 4000 lbs, so as long as the hitch weight is in check, any truck I get should be fine. Where can I find the maximum hitch weight rating for trucks? I have downloaded the owner's manual and looked online but I can't seem to find it for these trucks.

The 4.6 is a great motor. I have no complaints or regrets. I bought a 98 with 4.6 about a month ago and I love the 4.6. The original owner bought it to tow with, so I'm guessing it tows pretty good. It tows my boats fine, but that is all I have towed with it so far. My last truck was a lifted 97 2wd with the 4.2 and 3:08 stock gears and after towing boats with that, and now towing them with the 4.6 it feels like a breeze. haha

Great engines but get a 5.4, more power is always better!

I have used both 4.6 and 5.4 and I go 5.4 every time. More power and sounds a lot better with an exhaust plus more bolt ons.
