This makes sense because I know he was flipping it into 4lo and he was getting 4wd, just not 4lo I guess.

She was running errands for me so I couldn't get too mad. No damage done. And I don't know when around town it shifted into 4L. I know however, that mine is temperamental about going into 4L. Not a question of If it will, but rather what gear it needs to be in

All I know is that mine is an'01 and it has to be in N with my foot on the brake to shift into or out of 4 low. Sounds like your friends truck was either in 4 hi or something's wrong with it.

Theres no possible way for 4 low to actuate in gear... The gears must be relaxed to shift.

Exactly. I didn't know why, I just knew that it had to be in neutral.

I don't know how the ford electrical side of it works... But in mechanical talk... The break does nothing but slow the truck down to prepare for the sudden low gear change...

Sometimes if you get a sticky/work transfer... You might have to let off the brake (still in neutral) and let it free roll a bit (very slowly)

I'm not the best at explaining thingssssss, but you must get my drift

Btw - be careful when you lower the truck. It will be faster.

Yep, right there with ya. On my '01 F250 sometimes I would have to let it roll forward a little bit to engage or disengage. The one thing I miss about my 4WD system on my F250 is the manual locking hubs it had in case the shift on the fly system ever went out. Just had to turn them from auto to lock. Can't do that on our trucks.
