Default Ignition problems

I have a 1997 F150 King Cab 4.7, It will only start when in Neutral. When I insert the key into the ignition while in the park position, the key will not turn, nor will the engine start. But if I insert the key, then shift into neutral, the engine will start. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you able to do the shifting without applying the brake? Does your steering wheel lock in position without the key installed?

Thanks for the response.
Yes I can shift without applying the brake, but only after turning the key from the off position. Yes the steering wheel lock in position without the key installed.

Being able to move the shifter with the key partially on is normal. Is there a lot of play in your shifter/column. Check the bolts on the bracket that the shift cable clips to. The torx bolts tend to loosen then may cause it not to go all the way to park. If no problems there. Check the transmission range sensor. Connector problem, sensor faulty, or the TR needs to be adjusted!

Thanks for the response.
I May have stated the wrong problem. Let me restate my problem.

My 1997 F150 King Cab 4.7 will start in park, but will not shift out of park. But with the key in the on position, and shift into neutral, the engine will start. I can then shift into Drive, or any other position, but if I shift back into park, then I can't shift out of park.
Thank you all for responding.
