Somethings very wrong, I haven't seen an engine that dirty/caked up inside in awhile. The last time was, it was a lady with a Windstar. She had 65,000 miles on it , but never changed the oil.
Yea, unless I'm not seeing those pictures clearly ? It looks heavily caked, not saying you don't change your oil...don't take that wrong. Looks like the engine couldn't breath for a very long time. Like a plugged up PCV/Breather system. Of course, -many many short trips will do them in as well since there's really no way to keep up with oil changes if te engine hasen't had the time to run full cycle and burn off blow-by.
If I had to guess, that engine has suffered from lack of PCV, -hasn't been able to breath correctly for as long time. Hard to blame someone for it or point the finger. Not everyone is aware that a Motorcraft is the ONLY PCV valve that belongs on these engines. All other makes/knockoffs choke the life out of them slowly...way too restrictive.
I appreciate the input. I bought the truck March of 2016 with 167, 401 on it. I did not receive any maintence history unfortunately. I've done the following since I have owned it:
167579 Oil change
167606 Brake fluid replaced
167606 Motorcraft PCV valve replaced
168020 Rear Diff fluid change
168900 Airconditioner manifold hose, dryer, orificie tube, recharge
170500ish Oil change
173350 Oil change and air filter change
174860 another oil change (lost track of mileage since last change, played it safe and just did it)
174860 all new brakes in 4 corners, front ball joints, control arms, stabilizer links,
176015 Oil change (daughter had added oil and overfilled it so I drained and got to proper level)
177k One coil pack
178876 A/C clutch
178876 Transfer case motor
179039 Front differential and transfer case fluid change
181925 oil change
183408 oil change
And basically here I am. I try to stay on top of the oil, probably sometimes too often, but I know it is an old truck.
I'm definitely listening to you! Trying to learn along the way!
Yea your a victim of poor maintenance before hand. All you can do is frequent oil changes like you have been. At this point I wouldn't try any 100% synthetics in the crank. Just use the blend. Too many cleaners and there's a good chance you'll plug the filter. You plug the filter, the engine will cook in no time. The only stuff that actually works and it it works slowly to clean up the crank is a product called AutoRX. The only snake oil that isn't really snake oil....it works.
Other than that, just keep up with the oil changes.
There is debate about auto RX If you google there is plenty of debate about weather or not it works. Using stronger chemicals on an engine that is neglected can cause to much stuff to break loose like using pure synthetic. From reading the debate about auto rx I think there is enough to be skeptical about it.. I'd just change the oil frequently..

I only trust what I see work. The guys who preform my analysis recommended the stuff a long time ago. I only send in the trans fluid now, determining how long that Amsoil lasts in the trans. My engine is clean inside the covers and it has 350,000 on it. BUT, I use to Motorvac the engine as well. That played a part.
Just as an update. I received the Dorman the other day. Once I opened the box, I wasn't comfortable with the one I received. It looks like it was repaired and repainted. So they shipped me a new one. I'll try to work on it next weekend since the replacement jsut arrived this afternoon.
Ok, I'm back at it. Today I was able to get the spark plugs in. Just removed the injectors from the old intake and preparing to place on new. Lots of dirt and crud as I pulled them from the intake!
I wasn't planning on taking the injectors off the rail, so do I have to mess with the upper o-rings? The o-rings that go in the intake look ok, but I should probably replace them anyway, right?
Also, the injectors themselves, what should I clean them up with before sticking them in the new intake?
