I'm wondering if I can safely switch to synthetic oil, I currently have 146,000 miles, only have used dino oil every 3k miles with either quality purolator or motorcraft filter. I have researched and reviewed synhetic oil for past year but every time i go to switch to synthetic i chicken out because of mixed reviews. I live in new england where winters can get pretty cold and want to do this before winter, what are youre opinions? thankyou in advance

if the dino worked good for 150k i would stay with that. tested and proven to work for you for that long.

research the different properties and find out what oil is best for your motor.

some dino oils out perform synthetic oils and vise verse


keep changing the oil in 3k miles so the sludge doesnt build up and most oils will get the job done.

remember to let your truck warm up when its cold outside too. the oil works best at a certain temp.

I have used nothing but Mobil 1 full synthetic in all my vehicles. I put 125,000 miles on a '97 Dodge 2500 HD 4x4 V-10 and 165,000 on a '06 Scion TC. The vehicles always ran superb and I would still be driving them if for not for the sharp jump in gas prices in '05 and the untimely introduction of my Scion to a Semi September of this year. The one statement I can make for both vehicles despite the large amount of abuse I out them through is that they both ran as strong at the end as they did the day I rolled them off the dealership floor.

With the first oil change of my newly acquired '02 F150 Screw Fx4 I will be using Mobil 1 Full Syn.

I only have 90K on my 2002, but I've been using Mobil 1 for years. I use it in all my vehicles actually. My wife's Altima has ran synthetic since the first oil change at 5K miles. I use the extended performance Mobil 1 and the Mobil filters and usually go 12K between oil changes and have taken it to 15K with no problem.

They make a "high mileage" synthetic oil for high mileage vehicles that may suit your needs.

Thankyou for your replies, Im just nervous to start using synthetic now. Not sure if a it will losen any crud on seals and seap through small cracks if any and cause a leak in a leak free truck (knock on wood). If I do end up switching to syn, what are some good brand choices besides the obvious Mobil 1. Ive always either used pennzoil, or valvoline. Any super tech users out there?

I have the same fear you do that it will loosen too much sludge and cause a leak so I will stay old fashion with the conventional oil because its proven itself for many years

If you have been using dino oil for a long period of time dont change to a full synthetic. Just switch to a blended oil. Similar benefits to synthetic without the cost or all headaches if anf when oil leaks arise.

I usually switch to synthetic on all my vehicles but did not with my 95 300. It had 180k when I bought it and I have adhered to the 5k drain interval the previous owner followed using 10w-30 and Motorcraft filter. The 300 doesn't leak and burns about 3/4 of a quart every 5k. The wifes 94 Caprice LT1 and son's 05 Dodge 1500 Hemi get the Mobil 1. I also live in New England and in the cold weather I let it run about 1 minute for every 10 deg below 30 and drive it slow until it warms up.
