Default 04 Heritage Transmission

I'm going to need a different transmission for my 04 Heritage, believe it or not it still drives but when it was given to me I added about 3 quarts of oil to fill it, it is leaking ATF out of the input shaft seal and if I step on the throttle hard in 4th, try and take off in 4th or let the clutch out too fast in 4th it pops out. But once it's in stays in unless I accelerate hard. There is also a whirring sound when the clutch is let out that I have been told could be a throwout bearing since it isnt as loud if I slowly let the clutch out. What would you guys do for a replacement? Find one out of a junkyard? Is there anything I should watch for in doing that? I was told by a shop around me it could be as much as $2,800 for them to rebuild mine which seems outragous compared to things ive read on the forum. I see a website called Sppercision that has a re manufactured one for $695 with a $250 core which seems a little too good to be true. I'm pretty sure the clutch is also completely shot because it don't slip when taking off if I give it any throttle when letting it out it makes a horrendous grinding sound until the clutch is let all the way back out. Another question Can I put the transfer case on a 2wd transmission if I were to get one out of a junkyard or would it be better to just find a 4x4 tranny?

If manual transmission is leaking ATF, yeah...you got problems. Big ones.

Get a new oem clutch, throwout bearing, and a junkyard tranny. Order a plastic alignment tool, find a tranny jack with cradle (harbor freight works), and plan weekend with nothing else to do. Usually need good selections of extensions to get bolts. Assuming you got tools and jackstands, etc. I find scraps of **** carpet better to lay on than concrete personally.

Not unusual to not be able to get tranny on jack under a vehicle....too low.

I kick the tranny under the truck, use camlock straps frame to frame to suspend it once under there, then put jack under it. Opposite for removing it.....no jack needed for tranny, maybe to jack engine

I've got an assortment of extensions and that kinda stuff that shouldn't be an issue. I'm going to ask my cousin if he's got a tranny jack I can burrow if not i'll be getting a Harbor Frieght one. Do you recommend removing the Transfer Case before the Transmission or can they be pulled out together? Also should I replace the pressure plate also or is that something that I'll have to see when I get it apart? Sorry if these seem like stupid questions, this is my first tranny removal.

Pressure plate is probably fine
but wont know until get to it (broken finger, etc)
Flywheel could need surfacing....but i never did that, just cleaned up with emery cloth and block of wood...not warped..no high spots, etc

I dont know if theres a reason tcase would have to be removed (clearance or handling ability) on your truck...check manual. I never did.

Stabbing the input shaft back in....takes patience...angle must be perfect, splines aligned....sometimes get lucky and takes 10 min, sometimes 2 days of cursing.

Replace the clutch disc, pressure plate and throw out bearing while it is apart. They may look "fine" but it's too big of a job to do over to replace a relatively inexpensive part that you could have easily done before.

The flywheel should be reusable if it's not missing teeth or scored by clutch plate rivets and it can be cleaned up with a disc sander and fine grit. Yes, the proper way is to have it surfaced. You have to look it over and make the call.

This is probably a good time to look at oil leakage from the rear main seal too.
