Default I believe I have a rod issue.

So loud knock louder on passenger side. Just wanted confirmation. It’s a 98 4.6 oil pressure was holding according to gauge.

Also sounds like it’s from the front.

It sounds more like a rocker arm problem. I'd make sure which side it's coming from and then pull that valve cover. You may have to pull them both to make sure. I ran into this with an 04 KR I bought and sold to my SIL. The rocker came out of position when the follower let go. I'd check that first. A rod should be a constant double knock, and that isn't.

Thanks for your quick response. I will pull them tomorrow. Does this year have the timing chain noise issues?

I agree with what AK said. Wouldn't this possibly be a bad lash adjuster too, AK?

The early 2Vs were subject to timing chain, tensioner and or guide problems over the course of their existance. In 2002 model year, they went to another type guide that really holds up compared to what we had originally.

I was going to mention that the chains might be the culprit also, but the noise you show, sounded more like the lifter/lash adjuster and arm came loose or apart, most likely the noise you are experiencing. Check the followers and see if any are off position, etc, then if not, you may have to pull the front cover and check the guides.

Good luck with your quest.

Yeah, I certainly agree. Either way, those cam covers gotta come off anyway.

3rd party PCV valves can mimic a rod knock perfectly. It's because the openings are too tight. The Fram valve is the worst, can have the engine sounding like it's on deaths door.
