4x4 Will not engage.

4x4 Will not engage.
1998 4x4 will not engage. I hear the 4x4 light relay click and something above transfer case but no front wheels engage..
I just bought the truck last night and did not properly check the 4 wheel drive.
I do not have a service manual but will try to download.. How does the 4x4 system work? soleniods? vacum?
Any help in steering me to better troubleshoot would be greatly appreciated.

the 4x4 works like this-when u put it in 4x4 it shifts the transfercase in to send power to the front diff. at the same time vacume soleniods send vacume to a pod on your diff that engages the front axles to drive. check your soleniods and vacume lines down to that pod. if they seem ok then remove the pod on the front diff and lube the shift fork well moving it back and forth till it moves freely. reinstall and try it. also when putting it in 4x4 make sure your in park or ''n''and then reverse for about 10 feet then drive ahead. this prosses gives the pod the most vacume to get it to shift.

I had the same exact problem this week. Come to find out I had two lines behind the battery on the firewall melt. It was a very easy fix. Just grabbed some hard line and some rubber hose and fixed the problem. Didn't cost more than six bucks.

I was gone for the weekend but took it out last night. when I engage the 4x4 it sounds like a pin is trying to engage on the transfer case (was doing 10kph) then when I stoppped it dropped in but still no 4x4. I need some time to crawl undwer and start checking everything.. I will likely remove this pod and lube it anyway since this is a new to me used truck.
