Default How much is too much rust?

Hey guys. My 2000 f150 has some rust as it came from up north. The rocker panels are shot. Pretty much the basic rust eaten rocker panel that these trucks can get from the northern winter conditions. Besides that there alittle scaly rust that has creeped alittle further back from the rockers and at the rear of the truck, but the rest of the truck is rust free besides usual surface rust. I have put por15 over the areas that had more of that scaly rust after I wire brushed them.

My question is there a point where there is too much rust not to spend money into this truck? Isn’t like to replace the rocker panels and keep this truck running as long as I can. The rust just makes me question it.

Don’t have pictures at the moment but can take them tomorrow.

Depends on what the truck is worth to you. Sentimental value or rock solid drivetrain and the skill to do it... fix any amount of rust.

Just a secondary truck, misc other problems, or your paying a shop... very little Rust is worth it.

As long as the frame and body mounts are solid, the rest is largely cosmetic. I would keep it on the road as long as it's reliable and isn't costing me more a month in repairs that the payments of a new truck.

Since the vehicle came from the north, road salt is in the rust. And the remaining salt will make corrosion go on continuously. I would brush off as much rust as I can, wash with water, and spray something over (paint, rubber, cold gavanizing, etc)

The number one place to look for rust on these trucks, at least here in Utah, is the radiator support. I need to replace mine.

Here was mine a couple years ago. It is starting to flake now..... it's time to tear it apart and replace the support.

There seems to be substantial amount of steel still in place. Can you brush rust off and spray cold galvanizing paint? It works down in Florida. Maybe not in the north with road salt.

If it was not structural, I wouldn't worry. I'm going to replace it though, and use beeswax inside it, then POR-15 the outside. Now that I have a good place to work on it, I can take care of it this summer.

I covered over my rocker panels with some roofing sheet metal, the kind they use in standing seam roofs. It held for about 5 years in a heavy salt environment. Going to do it again this spring. Bend to fit, plug weld to whatever is strong enough to hold.
