Default How hard is it to change a rear axle seal?

Noticed some grease on my right rear wheel this morning and noticed the seal was leaking. Probably going to tackle this myself, just looking for advice as I've never done one before.

Few questions:
Am I going to have to buy all new gear oil?
Are there any special tools required/ tips or tricks I should know about?
Roughly how long does it take. I am mechanically inclined when I want to be lol.

It's a pretty easy job . 3/10 for hardness. Tire off, rotor off. diff cover off, pull center pin and bolt that's holding axle shaft in, remove c clip, pull out axle shaft. Then just a chisel to get under the seal all the way around and pry out. Clean it out. New one in, tap new one in with like a big *** socket so it sets in straight. reverse all above.

You should put new oil in. My 10.25 rear end took 3 liters and then 200 ml's of friction modifier. Ford costs about 22 bucks per liter of it here. Should take you like an hour all said and done.

Edit: Make sure you buy gasket maker too, to reseal on your diff. And make sure you clean it up real nice before you put on the gasket maker so it doesn't leak. And dont get any in the diff holes. The cover wont sit nice if you do.

Thanks man. But this officially sucks ***. I just spent over 100 on fluid and modifier for the rear less than a month ago when I installed the mag hytec diff cover, it holds 5 quarts...

Would it be absurd to try and re use the fluid I take out?

Just FYI most of the time when the seal is bed its time for wheel bearings. Just check the axle shaft for pitting or grooving where the bearing is.

Might wanna check your vent tube for blockage as well..could be why the seal failed in the first place.

yeap. Just need a slide hammer and bearing puller. Then a bearing install tool.. takes 10 minutes. Autozone, Advanced typically have the tools to rent also if you dont have them.

Thanks guys I appreciate it. Guess I should probably do both sides while I'm at it and save a headache later.

I typically do. I have found when it comes to axles most of the things are bad in pairs. If your truck Has close to 100k and never had axle bearings it time.
