Default Hmm...Moog Ball Joint Install Mistake?

Hello all, decided to try the upper control arm, lower ball joint job this weekend on the old 2000. Well this was an all day adventure (for just one side) but I was taking my time and trying to learn as I went. Well after buttoning up everything due to the daylight running out, I took a look underneath. It doesn't look like the balljoint is flush. The balljoint itself is tapered and I torqued it to 112 ft lbs. It doesn't look right though. I am not driving the truck anytime soon, so I figured I'd ask. I can tear it all apart again tomorrow morning.

The Moog didn't come with one. "Integral boot design" or whatever.

With the old style, You still need the boot to keep the grease from making a real big mess.

Your's is the new style and doesn't require a boot. It looks like it's wrong, but according to Moog, this is the new way. If it was mine, I would still try and use the old boot as a cover. JMO, of course. What I see is correct, according to Moog Technical. You are fine.

I agree but they didn't come with the boots and from what I see, it doesn't look they do anymore.

I can't really see it holding much grease. New and unimproved . Herman

The guy in the video says that the grease reservoir inside the joint is actually larger. More grease near the moving parts. The grease that ends up in the old style big boot just sits there doing nothing. Change can be good.

Any way that you look at the newer design, it still looks odd. There is absolutely nothing to hold dirt out of the upper cup without a boot. I think If I used this design, I would go ahead and throw a set of boot covers on there, just to keep the mud and dirt out. JMO, of course. These are what I would use o in blue.

I don't see how the reservoir can be any bigger the ball joint is the same size. They just put an "O" ring on the stud. Herman
