I am just using the cans that come with a gauge sold in auto stores designed for the general public. I am following the instructions on the can and my manual instructiosn to just add some Freon.

Whats the high side reading? Is the high side fluctuating? To do it the correct way take it to a shop and let them evacuate and re-charge it with the correct amount of freon. That way its not over or under filled. They can spot a problem before you can.

First, not sure where the low pressure port is on your model, follow the hoses and look for a fitting with a cap. The R-134 systems have different sizes for the low and high pressure ports, so it's the next best thing to idiot-proof. Low-side will likely be on the passenger side of the engine compartment somewhere.
Now, I have the same concerns as user NGM - bad things can happen to you if you aren't sure of what you're doing. The $50-$100 saved will look pretty small if you end up with a permanent injury. Eye protection is a must, face and hand protection are strongly advised.
I like to encourage people who have the initiative to do-it-yourself, but this is an area that one should get some better training other than the couple of paragraphs of instructions on the back of a kit.

This is an awesome diagram - thanks a lot! Both caps on the high and low are black and it says nothing on them. Usually they are blue and red with stickers. I saw the one that you specify as the low pressure valve on the diagram but I expected it to be somewhere on the hose and be a blue color. Thanks again - I will wear all the protection I have - maybe my motorcylce helmet
