Hesitation/Timing issue?

Is there a way to advance/retard the 'distributor' on a '97 4.2L (4x2).
I have a hesitation when giving it some throttle from an idle, and its hard to start, sometimes taking two or three times to 'catch' before it fires. Runs good otherwise. Checked all the plugs & wires.

More likely a fouled IAC. Remove & clean that puppy, then reinstall: http://oldfuelinjection.com/?p=39

Then preform a "Seafoam" application & you'll think you're driving a different truck: https://www.f150forum.com/f33/how-se...-1991-a-31505/

Idle surge and stall

I cleaned the IAC and did the Seafoam treatment, but it is still surging and stalling. It did make a difference and runs smoother other than that. But when I come to a stop it dies.

The hard starting, I'm thinking, is the battery. I checked it out and it seems it is a Toyota battery with 525 CCA. I fear this is not enough. I see that I should have a 750 CCA or larger according to a local parts store.

Any additional thoughts, anyone?

Well for one thing, you'd do better if you had posted in the section specifically for your year truck. I'm going to move it for you & leave a 1 day redirect in the "General section"

525 CCA is a little under powered.

When was the last time the plugs/ Cap & rotor where replaced?

4.2 never had a cap and rotor it was coil pack. if your having hard starting i would check fuel pressure.

I was thinking that, but he asked about adjusting his timing via distributor.

The 97+ trucks never had a distributor. They have a coil pack and there is no way to adjust timing.
