Default Help! Ignition Coil maybe!?!

ok. So I just bought this beautiful 2003 F150 lariat off-road with only 63k miles. When I’m driving and under slight acceleration I get what I think is a series of misfires. It’s very light like the road is bumpy. I can hammer down and it goes away. It’s started to idle slightly rough occasionally. It’s not throwing any codes. I had the spark plugs changed, fuel filter and ran some injector cleaner through it. I feel like it’s ignition coils but its
not throwing a code and only does it under slight acceleration? Any help would
be great!

mine did that at 45 mph when the trans was trying to decide if it should be in overdrive - replaced the plugs and coils and it went away

I’ll give that a look. It looks like a pretty simple task. I’m no mechanic but there was a step by step online that looked pretty simple. Thanks!

I went ahead and ordered some plugs and I’ll swap them out this weekend. I wish it would trip the check engine so it would tell me specifically which one is going out so I wouldn’t have to pay for all of them. I’ll try this and post back this weekend and let ya know.

One option (since you've ordered a few) is to replace a couple drive for a while and see if you can replicate. If you can't, you've fixed it. If you can, then switch out two different ones. Repeat till either all 8 have been switched out and you're still getting the problem or one of the switches will have fixed your problem... That is IF it is indeed a coil problem.

Sounds like a weak coil to me. You should get a lot of great service out of that truck. Make sure you torque the plugs down good.

Find someone with a scan tool that has Mode 6 capabilities and see if it shows any misfires there. Also, depending on the speed that it does it at could be torque converter shudder but sounds more like ignition breaking down.

It sounds like what mine did. I changed all the coils - O'Reilly's Auto Parts has the best prices, Amazon's prices are good, too. That fixed my problem.

Does it also feel like a misfire when going up a hill?
You can have a lot of misfires before a code gets set.
The coils usually last a long time..
The boots can degrade and arc right thru a visually good looking boot under load.
I change plugs and boots every 50k, still have most of the OEM coils.
Denso 671-0001 boots work well - $30 for 10 on ebay.
Be sure to torque new plugs to 20-25 ft-lbs so they do not work loose and strip out the threads in the head.
If your plugs are OEM I would check the torque on them, they were probably only torqued to 11-15 ft-lbs at the factory.
