Default Help with 99

Hello My name is Mary, I am new to this site. Hoping someone can figure out what my mechanic can’t. I have a 99 f150 lariet super cab . I just bought a month ago and had to sink money into it just for inspection. I bought a lemon but the motor runs great!! So i’ve been driving it and it runs awesome. I stopped at a store and when i came out it would crank but not start. I had it towed to garage and the mechanics said it needed a fuel pump. Then they called back saying it needed plugs and coil pack. Now they are telling me that it starts but when put in gear it cuts off and they can’t figure out what it is. So i have to pay the ill with a truck that still don’t run. please help if anyone has had this problem. Sorry so long

You need to get it out of there and take it to Ford or to a garage that's got an actual mechanic in it not just part throwers.

You didn’t buy a lemon (that’s a legal term, anyway), so you can feel better about that.

You did buy a 26-year old truck that wasn’t necessarily maintained-or maybe it was and the clock struck midnight on a bunch of stuff. That’s where you’re at and possibly that this truck has needed everything that the shop has mentioned so far.

The stalling out when out into gear sounds electrical with the transmission. Drive range selector? Harness issues? Who knows! We’re not there to see it up close.

Agree, find a shop with a Ford guy
I would verify which PATS it has
Early versions of PATS would allow start, then kill the engine only when put in drive
Scan tool to verify, you need an NGS for that 99 to read ALL the PIDS

It’s back home. It started but he had to put his foot to the floor to start.Said don’t stop anywhere because it won’t restart for hours. said think electrical or short somewhere. It surges in park which it never did before and sounds louder in motor which was very quite I’m very disappointed.

That is called a "flood clear" start
I use it often , any time a vehicle will not start, you try that first
Some F150 instrument clusters need to get the solder joints warmed up before the engine will fire (PATS was put in the cluster starting around your year)
I would try cycling the key on and off for about 3 cycles, then leave the key on for 10 seconds, then try to start it as a test
What does a NGS say when plugged in?

Everything so far points to a fuel problem. Did the mechanic install a new fuel filter ?

Need to do a fuel pressure test on that new pump and on the fuel pressure regulator.

Well guys it’s fixed!! I had to take it to another shop and the guy called me back in 20 minutes! It was the engine coolant temperature sensor. Who would have thought. Then he had to figure out why it was running rough which was the IAC motor. Which I asked the previous garage to check. But when the truck went to the previous garage it was running smooth. when I got it back hoses and wires were hanging , pieces broke and the motor cover gone, which I have to go pick up today. All in all I found me a new mechanic!!! So my baby is back on the road sounding good as ever!! Thank you all for your advice, suggestions etc… I love this platform you really learn a lot about your vehicle. I should have known by buying a 99 I would be dealing with issues. The motor sounds good. Do you guys think it was worth investing all that money with 245k on it?
