Default Help! 8in vs. 10in. / 285 vs. 305

About to spring on some new wheels and tires. I have a stock 01' Lariat 4x4. Couple of questions before I go for it.

I'm looking to run 33in. BFG A/T's, with a 16in. rim. Now I have to decide between a 16 x 10 wheel, or 16 x 8. Anyone have a list of pros and cons between the two? If I understand correctly the stock rims on my truck are 17 x 7.something.

And from there I need to decide which 33 to go with. Either 285/75/16 or 305/70/16. From what I've read if I went with the 10 inch wheel I'd probably be better off with the 285 (305 might be too wide with the 10 in. better suited for the 8 in.) Am I correct on these statements?

Anyone have pictures they could post up of 33's with 16x10 or 16x8 wheels?

Also the wheels I think I'm gonna run are the Eagle Alloy Series 058. (4 1/2 in. backspacing)

No the 305 wouldn't be to wide, it would be quite narrow on a 10 inch wide rim.

I would go with the 8 inch we're I you. It's not ideal but 10 is to wide and you will never have tires designed for a wheel of that width.

The 10 inch wide is heavier will stick out more making your front end not be able to fit as big of tires and your MPG will suffer.

My buddy has 16x8.5 rims and he has 345/75/16 tires on his Chevy. Thats a 37/13.50/16. That's pretty big and it fits his wheel and looks perfect.

So IMO go with the 8" wide rim. Will be better in the long run and fit any tire size that you are asking about.

I agree with 8" wide rims for 305s and thinner. You don't need 10" wide rims until you get to to the really wide tires, like your buddy's 345s should probably be on 10s but i'm sure they look fine on the 8.5s

Ya I think I find myself leaning towards the 8. Only weird thing I just noticed is that with the Eagle Series 058 wheel the 16 x 10 has a 4 1/2in. backspacing, while the 16 x 8's have a 3 3/4 backspacing. Not sure if I want that much backspacing, I want the tread to stick out a little bit but not a lot. Is 3 3/4 too much? Also if your suggesting the 8'' what do you think on 285 vs. 305 considering the backspacing as well?

I was actually worried that they were to narrow but surprisingly they fit great and the bead sat well.

That backspacing difference is due to the rim width change. I guarantee you the 8" wide rims stick out less than the 10".

As for tires either will look good and be fine.

You were worried 345s were too narrow for 8.5" rims??

And to get how far they'll stick out take the differences in width and BS from the stock size and new wheel size and add them together. So stock 16s are 7 inches wide and I think the backspacing is like 5.5 inches so you have the inch difference in width and the 1 3/4 inch in BS difference and the tires on the new rims *should* stick out 2 3/4" further than stock.

Oh no! I meant I was afraid the 8.5" wide rim was to narrow for 345's

Good hah, that's what I hoped you meant. Technically if you look at the specs they probably are, but if they don't look ballooned then whatever, they're fine.
