I have to replace my heater core on my 2000 Ford F150. The manual says to purge the A/C system but I have seen other instructions that do not mention it. Do you have to purge the a/c to replace the heater core? Thanks for any information.

Check around at local mechanic's shops to see what they want to do it. A few blocks down from me, a guy opened up a shop and I saw him sitting around day after day with little or no business so I stopped by and he only charged me $300 for labor, and $50 for the heater core. Considering the amount of work involved I'd say it was worth it.

Only thing he didn't do was clean out the air vent ducts while it was all apart so I kept smelling antifreeze. I took a rag with some soap and water and just cleaned each vent as far down as I could reach and it was good enough, the smell stopped.

You do not need to touch the A/C system at all. $300.00 for a heater core replacement is a bargain.
