1997 f-150 What is the wheel that pushes the serp belt against the alternater pulley?
Last night I heard a clanking sound and thought one of the ladders had come loose and was clanking on the ladder rack. Got out and inspected and ladders were secure, but it was pitch black outside so proceeded the couple of miles to my home. This morning I opened the hood and inspected the engine for a possible broken serpentine belt, belt is intact, but the wheel that is next to the alternator pulley was loose, the bolt missing and sitting on top of wires of the engine, it looks a little beat up and it must have been the clanking i heard last night. Also last night the check engine light came on when this happened.
What is that extra wheel in there? it doesn't look under tension. Why would this turn on the check engine light? Where can i find the proper bolt to use to secure the wheel in place? ...after I clean it up and remove burrs.
Thanks in advance

If the pulley comes off you loose you belt your truck will not charge it will also overheat due to your water pump will no longer turn its very important the bolt would be metric you can get it from any hardware store or auto parts store I would also check the pulley it mite also need replaced

try autozone napa or another parts store. if you drive it without that pulley there wont be any tension on the belt thus meaning no water pump circulation and no alternator charging and no power steering
