I have a hard time believing the "performance coils" could give any appreciable performance gain without being accompanied by several other engine mods. When I had an engine hesitation issue, I replaced all 8 coils with generic coils from Ebay, and I replaced all 8 plugs with Motorcraft plugs. Total cost: $104. The performance gain was immediate and noticeable. I think most who are adding "performance coils" are not getting a performance gain from the special coils, they are simply feeling the effect of replacing old, worn out coils and plugs with new ones. The primary effect of performance coils is to separate buyers from more of their money. That's just my opinion on the matter, and my opinion and $5 will get you a coffee at Starbucks. ;-)

I agree with war hammers post I did the same purchased cheap coils but from amazon and stock motorcraft plugs from local parts store worked great saved a lot of money. For the cost I don't think you will get the preform from over priced coils and plugs And with the money you save you can buy the next part I got to have list

I was running MSD's, then switched to EFX coils. Now I am running just plain Motorcrafts. And testing them from a spark output tester. The factory coils range from 38k to 42k volts. No resistance in a coil is a bad thing.

I had replaced all plugs and new motorcraft coils before I tried the granatelli coils and I got better mpg and low end torque. I guess the only way to really find out the truth is to put it on a dyno. Does anyone wanna donate any $ for a couple of dyno pulls? I will put the motorcrafts back on then go to the dyno then change to a "performance coil". I think bigger spark, better burn. All these "performance parts" claim performance gains, and most of them don't dyno all vehicle applications. All I can say is I have every bolt on and dyno tune minus a performance maf and throttle body spacer on my 2001 supercrew 4.6 auto and I have 245 rwhp and 315 rwtq. With drivetrain lose, that is around 340 hp and 400 ft lbs at the flywheel. All I'm saying is the dyno doesn't lie and a company wouldn't be in business if their product is crap. Just like those electric superchargers. Crap

I dont see every bolt on making that much power out of a 4.6. It was rated @ 260 and will make a average of 180-200rwhp at the most on a good day with a strong engine. By your rwhp numbers you are actually only around 310hp at the flywheel. Parasitic loss in the truck is closer to 20-25%. I have dyno'd my truck before with all 3 brand of coil packs and never really notice a large difference on the dyno. I still have my EFX coils. Maybe I can talk to Mike @ MPT and see if we can arrange a coil pack shootout @ the next SouthEast F150 forum meet.

The high end coils ( ex: msd, accel, granetelli ) are used to substain more voltage at higher rpm's. that's it there's no actual power gain

Ya never know my "old" 98 regular cab 4.6 put down 308 to the wheels a few weeks ago. With stock coils, and almost stock exhaust.
