Help Please! Suspected trans problem.
Hello I just bought a F-150 and I am seeming to have a problem with first gear in my truck.
I have a 1997 F150 V6 4.2L 151k miles with what looks like from what I have read on the boards here a 4R70w Tranny w/ Over Drive
From a standing start it seems like I am revving WAY past what seems to be the normal gear change. There are no jolts or pops or noises it just goes way up and then shifts. It seems to be pretty normal through the rest of the gears.
It also seems to have a slight delay from what I would imagine when shifting from reverse to drive. Though I have no basis for comparison other than my civic. Just seems a little unresponsive.
Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge with me!

Good Morning John;
First I must admit I am new to Automatic Tranny's and Fords. But the first thing - do you know if your tranny fluid level is correct.
You know: Drive 20 miles. Park on level ground. Go thru each gear - allowing time for the tranny to engage (Park, N, R, D, 2, 1). Check the level.
Some would say to change the fluid and filter if it has not been done. I know some also say new fluid in an old tranny can cause problems.
I would start there and wait for someone more experienced than I to take this further.
Best wishes - I hope it is a quick fix for you!

Seems your 1-2 shift modulator is sticking or leaking. It is a spring loaded plunger located on the front right corner of your transmission valve body. The rubber seal on the modulator may be leaking, taking longer to build enough pressure to force a shift. Start with a fluid flush. This will replace ALL the fluid in the transmission and torque converter.
