Default Gear indicator needle is off

Have a 97 4.6L V8 Scab and the needle that tells me what gear I am in is off. For example when I am in park, it reads reverse. It always reads one gear to the right off. And I can't drop all the way down to 1. When I'm actually in second, it reads "1" and won't let me go any lower. So I just have to count three clicks to know I'm in drive lol. Any ideas what this could be?

try the tension wheel for the indicator. Search the forum, and there should be quite a few responses/ questions about it.

Start with the simple, easy, and free fixes first.

^^^This. There is a white little plastic piece behind the steering column, i'd bet money that the piece has broke. Mine did the same thing. Its like a 20 dollar fix, but you gotta take the dash apart.

Yeap. Thats what it was, the white plastic piece was broken and I'm not sure what its called to get a new one lol. But instead, I just pulled the cable back with my hand and zip tied it to the metal bar below. Works like a charm. I will be finding one of those white pieces the next time I go to the scrap yard though. Thanks guys
