I am on my second 4.2. First one was in a 01 and it went 110k miles w/o any problems, then I had to buy I battery for it lol. Not too bad.
Now Im on the second one bc I like the reliability of the 01 4.2, but it didnt suit my needs back then. Anyways, this one is a 97 and it only has 79k miles on it but every emissions part on it is shot, the front end it shot, and the interior is falling apart around me. Even with that said, I still think these 4.2 engines last an amazing amount of time.
Search around the forum and you will find tips such as GOTTS mod, changing over to an electric fan, etc etc. Good luck and Im glad to hear that other parents are teaching their daughters how to drive a standard!

There is a an overflow and return line that runs from the filler neck back to the tank. If the gas was full and the hose is cracked, it will leak gas when expanding and when filling the tank. Ford did a recall on some vans for that problem. I had the problem with my Ford van. If the gas tank is not full, I have no idea. Try starting it with the gas cap loose and see if gas leaks.
