Gas tank recall - I saw it here first

Love my truck
First let me say that my 98 F150 is by far the best truck I have every owned. With 170K it is in very good shape and has required few repairs. However, when the front strap rusted trough and snapped the remaining strap couldn't hold the full tank of gas and down it went, hitting the road smashing the front end on a pot hole, ripping the fuel filler neck and spilling gas. I was licky. It happen on a surface street directly accross the street from a Ford dealer. I was about to get on the expressway a few miles up the road. When I called Ford and said that this was a safety hazard, they seemed unconcurned and asked the dealer to give me a break on the repair cost ($650 including the discount). That is what prompted me to file a report with the NTSB. I live in Michigan and I'm a loyal Ford owner and I really don't want to see them make stupid moves like the pinto again. They need to own up to the fact that this is a problem and replace the straps (with stainless steel) on the trucks that are out there before they end up regretting it. Sure I would like them to pay for my repair but I would be more impressed if they told the public that this was just a bad design and fixed it. A simple frame bracket could have prevented the free fall of the tank to the road but given that it is what is; they should replace the straps in a recall. This is the best selling truck on the planet and there are millions on the road with this design. It could get ugly if they don't act now. For now we will continue to tell everyone we see with this vintage truck to go get them checked.

We had a 99f150 with 289000 when we totaled it last spring on some ice. One night the Old Lady called me at work and said the truck was in the center lane, with the gas tank on the ground. She he'd just filled it up. Sure enough, she wasn't't lying. I used a couple of racket straps to pull it up and secure it in place.I had never seen anything like it.

Picked my 99 F-150 SuperCab up this afternoon after having the tranny fluid and filter changed. They told me one of the gas tank straps was broken, rusted through.
Call my local Ford dealer, they have the strapes in stock so both are getting replaced tomorrow morning.
Don't have any idea how long ago the strap let go but when I think about loading the tank with 30 gallons of fuel........its scarey!!!
