Default Front differential noise

Hey guys,
When I put my 97 f150 into 4WD and drive (not on pavement im talking about snow and mud) the front differential makes a loud humming noise. Its important that the 4WD works flawlessly due to my northern location (tons of snow).
Any ideas what this is?
Should I worry?
How many arms and legs do I remove to pay for the fix?

do a service on your diff and ad lucas oil stablizer instead of gear oil. it will quite it up. thr reason its making noise is its either got a bad tooth or is just wore out and out of alignment.

Ok, I will take the diff out and take it to a shop (or is this something I can do myself? I dont have feeler gauges to check backlash and stuff like that so im not sure if im equipped for the job.)
Is this something I need to do right away? Am I in immediate danger?

no try a service first! not a rebuilt! just drain the oil and replace with lucas oil stabilizer. that should quite it down. then if that doesnt work worry about a rebuild

some noise is normal. Just change the fluid and add stabilizer as mentioned.
