I gotta problem I think, 01- Supercrew
Well, this is my first post. I am no stranger to vehicles, and have an above average working knowledge of the internal combustion engine. I am also the proud owner of my first Ford, being a Mopar convert.
I have an 01 Supercrew, 5.4 Liter. I performed the Gotts Mod, cleaned the MAF sensor, and installed a Dynaflow exhaust (identical to the FM Super44). The Gotts mod made a difference, the exhaust only added to it. The truck is a 4x4.
Here is my issue. Last night, the truck smelled like it was running a little rich and had a tad of smoke coming from the exhaust. So I cracked the throttle a little bit, and I felt a shudder. This was in my driveway, never got over 5 mph, literally. This morning leaving church, I went to pull out of the parking lot, just driving. When it changed from first to second gear, a little shudder again. I said something to my wife about it, and she told me that friday, while sitting in a parking lot idling, it did the same thing with her. The truck has 81,234 miles on it.
Now, I am a cop, and at work we have several Explorers, 4x4 with the V8. One of ours at work was doing pretty much the same thing, but I cannot remember what the diagnosis was. I am also not a real fan of the coil packs on these engines, as I have had 2 replaced on my 02 Crown Vic (work vehicle). Any ideas guys? When I say shutter, I mean it kinda feels like you've hit one of those rumble strips on the side of the highway, just without all the racket, and not as bad.
Thanks...

could be coil packs man. does it only do it in gear? not in neutral? i have replaced all 8 of mine at one time or another. also are they stock plugs? i had a missfire a while back when i had only 7 of the coils changed so i went in changed the last coil and did new spark plugs since mine had like 70+K on them and she ran great.

If it is obd2 computer at least with mustangs you can just rent a code reader or possibly use one for free from one of the major auto parts stores. It plugs into a diagnostic port, under the dash with mustangs. Any error codes should point you in the correct direction, think it even can tell what cylinder is failing if any (plug or COP).
