Default Four Wheel drive question

Looking at buying a 2000 f150 automatic with 4 wheel drive. When switch to 4L the light on dash says it's engaged but when driving it drives away like normal (no creeping). I was afraind to drive it too fast but it appeared it would accererate like normal. I shifted into 4 Hi and dash light said it was engaged and I did drive that up to 40 MPH and it appeared engaged but I wasn't in any kind of terrain to verify. Any thoughts?

Well could you tell for sure it was in 4wd hi? When you put it in 4 low did you put the truck in neutral and hold your foot on the break? It will not go into 4low unless you do it that way...

I can't say for sure it was in 4 Hi. I drove it a bit on payment, turning, backing up and really didn't notice any difference in the feel of it. Is there a easy way to verify it's truly engaged?

Yeah go off road and find some mud and you will know real fast....even when mines in 4hi I can "feel" the difference....
Or Jack it up and put it on Jack stands....
