Default F150 Supercrew tailgate cables don't fit.

I have a 2003 F150 Supercrew built 4/22/2003. My step son broke both tailgate cables, and creased the tailgate while loading tile (Don't get me started).

I ordered a set of Dorman replacement cables, part number 38503, which should be the right part. However, these are 18 3/4" long center to center. My cables are/were about 17 1/4" center to center, so when trying to fit the Dorman cables on they are too long, and the tailgate rests on the bumper. It appears that the OEM parts (3L3Z-9943052-AA Driver side, and 3L3Z-8443052-AA Passenger side) are discontinued, and unobtainium.

Second part, it appears that there was a rubber bumper stop on the bottom of the end of the bed to keep the tailgate from falling, and creasing. There is the post, and hollow for it, but the stop is missing (see photos).

My questions, has anyone else encountered this problem, and how did you solve it?
Is there a rubber stop that is missing from this vehicle, and does anyone know the part number?

no idea on the cables, junk yard maybe?

As for the stop in the middle of the tailgate, mine does not have any rubber stopper there, no idea if there is supposed to be one either.

Thanks for the advice. I have some on order. I wonder what that is on the bottom of the tailgate, and bed? It sure looks like a setup for a rubber stop.

Here are the actual Ford part numbers for the right and left cables for SuperCrews from my parts book (Ford). 3L3Z-8443052-AA and 3L3Z-8443053-AA. These only fit the 2001-03 supercrews. Flaresides and Stylesides have totally different numbers.

Dorman doesn't show a correct cable for the supercrews. For some reason they make it for the pickups with stylesides and even stepbeds, but not the crews. I'm surprized. I don't actually remember there being 3 numbers (2 I remember), but in this case there are 3 types.

No one company shows having both cables available (discontinued) but I posted the places that have it available for your truck. Hope this helps you out some. As far as the bumper part, I couldn't find that from anywhere. I'd probably find a shock rubber and make it fit. Just an idea for you. Anyways, below are your cables and where you can still get them. Good luck.

Thanks AKdoggie. I called the local Ford dealer, and got the part numbers. I located them, from 2 different sources, and have some on order. It makes sense to have a stop there to help bear some of the weight.

The Bolts that holds the cable are adjustable like tailgate lock bolts.

It is hard to adjust an inch or more of cable. There are definite different part numbers, as the OP found out. The 3 lengths vary from 17 1/4 (his) to 22.+ inches. He has them on order, so all is well.

Well, the left tailgate cable is definitely not available. I am sure that it is sitting on the shelf at some dealership or parts store, but I cannot find it. I have searched three different boneyards, and no joy. It seems that the tailgates are the first to go, and they take the cables too.

Why would it not work if I got 2 right side cables, and used them? They are the same length, and it appears that they should fit. Or If I can figure out who could do it I have the old parts. Would it be feasible to have the old cables simply reset to the old fittings, possibly with an adhesive for extra strength?

Anyone else have any other ideas?

As far as the two right side cables, I don't remember much about my tailgate cables lol, but I believe the only thing that will get in your way is the little piece of metal that keeps the cable on the truck. Bend that out of the way or break it off and I think you'd be good. I had a supercab though so designs may be different.
