Question f150 starting problem

I have a 2003 F150 fx4 pickup with 5.4L engine. Instrumental panel will not energize till key has been on for 1 minute. Until that time starter will turn engine over, but will not start. After 1 minute, engine will start and run normally. What are possible causes and fixes?

Sounds like it might be a problem with the computer. May need to take it to a shop that can diagnose computers. Dealership might be the safest choice. Have them do a diagnostic.

It may be a computer(pcm) related issue, like a failing pcm relay.

The instrument panel is itself a type of computer with memory and processor chip and capacitors on a PCB. The older instrument panels are known for broken solder joints. Here's a video, below, where you can see some of the PCB components.

When you say "energise" what do you mean? Is it completely dead, no lights at all? Does other stuff happen that makes you think it's only the cluster? Might be some clues there. Is the THEFT light flashing before you turn the key to Run? The PATS module could be involved also.

This might not be your problem but it shows several components that could go bad, like on any computer. Just food for thought.

Thanks, I will watch the video. But, the instrument panel is not completely dead, If my door is open, the open door light is illuminated. I can't remember for sure, but I think things light up momentarily when the key is first turned on, but then go off for that minute. On mechanic said I should check the voltage on fuse # 30 and it measured 8 volts during that minute. That's what directed me to the ECU. There may also be some kind of electrical short, one day I found the battery dead, but I haven't taken chances since then, I've disconnected the battery every day after I've worked on it.
