There's some kind of hum, but I can't verify that it's coming from the LF (the one in question) hub - I couldn't spin it fast enough by hand to replicate.

But, the more I think about it, there's kind of a wobble that's more noticeable at highway speeds and then the wear on the inside edge isn't necessarily indicative of a wheel bearing.

I can't make my mind up on whether it's the bearing or the damn upper ball joint.

Well if you're taking it apart anyway I'd do both.

May end up just getting a complete kit for $400 - $500 over the summer and just banging out the entire front end suspension.

Would be better off that way. I started replacing bits and pieces then finally just redid the whole thing.

If they only had a kit worth investing in. If you plan on keeping the truck then piece what you need together using Moog replacement parts. You get a good solid front end that won't move around on yuh. It'll cost more though...you do get what you pay for and can find deals once you know who to go through.

Other than that, you can probably go with a kit or cheaper stuff if you don't plan on keeping the truck.

But you can really beef up the front end if you want.

For my works truck it was 2003 regular cab xl. Both front tires did that. It was aligned ever time we put new tires on it. Not much could be done about it. But rotate tires.

I plan on keeping this truck for a while, but that brings me back full circle to "Guess the broken part."

Here's a little more information that may be helpful: When I grab the tire and push at the top and bottom, it only moves and makes a noise when I push at the top, not the bottom.

It's been several years since I've owned / worked on a truck like this, so my brain has just dumped any useful knowledge I had at one point.

Upper ball joint is bad.

Ball joints will move at the 6/12 postions
Tie rods will move at the 3/9 postions
Bad hub bearing will move every direction.

Just to update: Pulled the upper control arm out this afternoon and the ball joint was trash.

Remember the spring stoppers behind doors that you would play with as a kid? That's how the ball joint was.
