Exclamation Engine Squeaking When In Gear, But Not Moving

I have a 1998 F-150, 4.6 V8, automatic transmission with just over 150,000 miles.

About a month ago, i started hearing a clicking sound when the truck was in gear - increasing in frequency as I accelerated. About 2 weeks ago, this clicking developed a squeak. The squeak occurs mainly when I start to accellerate.

I put the emergency brake on, held down the brakes, put the truck in gear and hit the gas. The squeaking and clicking still happened even though the truck was not moving. I think this would rule out a u-joint issue since the drive shaft doesn't move unless the back tires move.

Any ideas?

Idler pulley bearing with the belt being worn now because of bad Idler pulley?

The belt looked fine. I guess I could try squirting some wd40 in the pulley to see if that kills the squeak

thanks for the nudge in the right direction sharptp. i think it is either the idler pulley or the belt tenion pulley. we squirted both with wd40 and it temporarily stopped the squeaking.

looks like i have some work to do this weekend.

ok, so i replaced the idler pulley tonight, and the squeak/click is still there. I think the tension pulley bearings may also be going bad, so I will probably replace it this weekend.

Might also go ahead and replace the belt while I am in there.

Ok, we replaced the tensioner pulley and the squeaking is still there. If the engine is cold, it takes it a few minutes before the squeak shows up. We used some tubing and think we found the source of the noise somewhere near the exhaust manifold on the passenger side of the engine.

Could it be some carbon buildup on a valve or maybe a crack in the manifold?

Any update on this?

I've replaced one idler pully and the Tensioner arm (and pully), as well as a new belt.

I have also checked that all the spark plugs are tight.

I have one more pully that I can replace, although I am doubting that is the problem. I have already pulled the dust seal off the bearing and put in new grease and the pully doesn't feel restricted or grinding.

1998 F150 v6.
