I am wondering on what could be causing difficulties from shifting manually from 2wd to 4wd. You have to pull on the leaver really hard. Could this be a linkage lubrication problem. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem.

Stuck t-case shifters are nothing new. If they're not used often they rust up and get covered in road grime. Just get under there and start blasting all the linkage points with WD40 or PB Blaster and work the shifter back and forth as much as possible. It'll loosen up with use.
