Just changed the oil in my Dad's 4.6l this weekend and the motor sounded like $&@? and then some. Regular maintenance on his truck is obviously not his priority. The oil was so black an missing 1.5l. I used the Quaker State 5w30 Conv. He had plenty of it in his garage but was waiting for me to do it I guess. Took it for a spin after the oil change and the knocking, ticking noise was still present but not has loud. Should have probably used the 5w20 but manual says 30.

Oooo, good luck with that Quaker sludge. Thats probably why that thing knocks in the first place. My dad used it too, and his 00 5.4 truck has a main knock in it for sure. I say valvoline only for me, and in our dads cases, maybe a quart of lucas lol...

I'd change the oil and the filter again after a couple tanks of gas. Make sure all the old crud is flushed out. I would also go with Valvoline or Motorcraft oil.

Sorry, thought you said the knock came after you changed the oil lol.

I agree with the Lucas addative, that might quiet the knock a little more.

Quaker is qrud... I learned that in my first real truck 30 years ago. I ran Quaker State in my 65 F100 for 25K. A bad timing chain caused me to take it apart and the sludge was UNBELIEVABLE!!! I switched to Valvoline and 5 years later I took the same engine apart and while there was some sludge in the pan, there was nothing any where else.

My Dad said it was because QS is parafin based.

My cars and trucks get nothin but Mobil 1 now. Synthetics Rule.
