The piece that is destroyed is a cover that covers over your ball joint between the steering knuckle and the control arm.
What you need to do to check the ball joint is jack it up under the lower control arm (as close to the outside of the control arm as possible) and put a large pry bar underneath the tire and lift the pry bar up and down.
If you have noticeable play in the tire, then one (or both) of your ball joints needs to be replaced.
cory-burt's method will detect a ball joint that is REALLY bad and needs immediate replacement, but it can also detect other play like a loose wheel bearing nut.
