Depends on how much torque you want to run. If you keep it under 400 lb-ft then you can get away with a 8.8 rear end and a M5R2. Also depends on your idea of diesel engine. If it's a 6.6 Duramax, 5.9/6.7 Cummins, or a 7.3/6.7/6.4/6.0 PSD then your going to need to replace things, if you can even fit them in the engine bay. Most of the 4 cylinder diesels only make 150 hp (3306 is a bit different) at most and about 320-350 lb-ft out of the box and many people just run them as is.

4 cylinder diesel is the way to go. The 4 Cummings is compact and has lots of power. Simpler is better but since nothing else will fit, what choice is there?
On one forum some guy asked if he could put a 12 cyl turbo diesel in his F 150. That there is just wacky.
A 99 with a 4BT conversion: Hey, where's all the computer BS and sensors?

Good old fashioned mechanical diesels. Before I forget, the September issue of Diesel World goes into replacing injectors on a B series engine as well as some Jetta TDI mods if anyone here has a diesel Jetta. Somewhere they talk about a F250 that has had the PSD swapped for a 5.9.

That article i posted... The guy put a 5.9 Cummins in a ranger... the rangers are quite a bit smaller then the 150... With a little frame stretch, and alot of parts... a 12 valve in a 150 is doable

I've seen a few 3.9's in Rangers. All they do is replace the M5R1 with the M5R2 transmission and drop them in. A 5.9 will actually fit in an F150 without any frame extensions as long as you don't mind having about 1/2" of clearance between the block and radiator. Modded 3.9's can easily match the 5.9's in power with the right parts. Most people don't need that much torque though.
