Default dash cup holder stuck

Hey guys, I have an 01 f150 4.2L 5-speed with a stuck cupholder in the dash. I usually have it pulled out for that reason but my wife keeps pushing it in (OCD), and I have to get a screwdriver to pry it open when that happens. Is there a quick fix for it or should I just order new assembly? By the way I will also use the search button after I post this, so no need to do a search button reply. Thanks guys!

Have you tried taking it apart to see if there is something jammed up?

No nothing was in the way, but i figured out where a spring came from a few months back. Just have to attach it with some screws, then it should work again.

that would be my first guess.. if not that, then perhaps you need to remove it and give it a good scrub down, including the guides that it slides on..

The problem was the spring that i found a few months ago had snapped off of the back of the cup holder, and all I should have to do is rivet it back on. But it would be a good idea to re-grease the rails. Thanks for the tip!

I just recently signed on this forum and already have learned a lot from you folks. The spring on the back off my cup holder just broke, but I don't know how to remove the holder from the dash. Can anyone chime in on this for me? Also, what would be the better way to repair it? Thanks!!!!

If it's the same as mine my just push down a little clip that is on top of the holder. you'll probably have to use a screwdriver or something to get to it.

Default Got it!

Had the same problem (2001) - GENTLY pry (putty knife is best) the collar around the radio/vents off - there's 4 screws around the inside of the next collar take these out GENTLY pull out on the collar - U can see the top of the cup holder - work the holder out with prying - you can reach up/behind the holder to check the springs - theres a wire that runs into the back of the holder (??) - at the rear of the cavity is a mounted wire (S shaped) that locks the holder - I sprayed silicone on everything I could see and the holder works now - there was an unused ashtray insert in the holder - removed it and the holder still works! am a happy camper - anyone know what the wire is for? (connects to an electrical connection but the lighter is on the other side - runs into the rear of the holder)
