cranks but wont start
Hey guys.
Posting this for my dad. He has the 2002 v6 f150 with a 5 speed. He went to start it up today to get to the lawnmower, and it wouldn't start up. It kept cranking over but wouldn't fire. This is the first time he has had any trouble with it starting up.
Thank you so much for any help you guys offer. It is very much appreciated.
God bless.

You should first see if it is fuel or electrical. If you have a timing light, attach it to one of the plug wires and have your dad crank it over while you watch. If the timing light is not going on, it is electrical. Then you have to determine what it is. I would look first at the grounds on your firewall and engine. Make sure these grounds are tight and not heavily corroded. Clean and tighten as necessary. Test for spark again and if still no spark, check the crank shaft sensor and the cam shaft sensor. Check the connections to these and clean if they are heavily caked in dirt or oil. They each cost about $25 so if you don't want to fool with the cleaning, just go ahead and replace them. If your PCM (computer) does not receive messages from these sensors, it won't send a message to the COP's and give you spark
If you have spark, you want to check the fuel. I would start by replacing the fuel filter. While you listen at the fuel filler, have your dad turn on the key. You should hear the fuel pump go on for a few seconds. If it doesn't, it is either the electrical connection to the fuel pump or the pump is a goner. If you have spark and fuel pump working, it could be that the pump is not putting out enough pressure. Test it with a pressure gauge. You could also spray starter fluid in the air intake and see if it starts. If it fires, you most likely have a fuel pump failure or clogged fuel line that is starving the engine of fuel.
You should also clean the MAF sensor and change the air filter if they are dirty. The MAF could cause no spark. If you have a code reader, the codes might help you zero in on the problem faster than trouble shooting as outlined above. From what you described, it is more likely than not that it is either the crank or cam sensor (electrical) or the fuel pump is a goner and not working at all.
