Many shops F up rear ends when someone wants a gear change. Its something best done by real specialist if your paying for it. With the tools, patience, some guidance, and instruction any intelligent person can do it. Too many people in a hurry. Too many shops let unqualified people work on vehicles. Its on-the-job training. My stepson is a mechanic at a GMC dealership....I dont trust him to change oil in one of my vehicles. Seriously.

My wifes dumbass lil bro did one once after busting tooth on ring gear screwing around on a lifted chevy truck with 37" tires and huge engine. It was a gas guzzling 454 or such. It might have lasted 2000 miles....

Oh boy, do I know this all too well.... My Buddy hired a guy that was a "mechanic". Mind you, my Buddy was rebuilding the trans ONLY here... but this Dude pulled the driveline, and noticed the pinion nut had oil around it. Tightening it as tight as it will go should fix that, right? So, it trashes the diff in under 50 miles. My Buddy tells him to go pull a R&P at the yard - and make sure it's a 3.73 ratio. So 37 teeth on the ring, and 9 on the pinion equals 3.73, right? Errrr.... wait, that's 4.11 there. Close enough. So my Buddy has another friend of mine install them for him... an unsuspecting friend who had no idea that he was matching an old ratio, let alone the front diff. So, the customer gets it back everything seems fine to customer, but they say it seems more peppy and the speedometer is off.... oh, but we put it in 4wd and trashed the transfer case.

My Buddy fired him at this point. Shoulda been after strike one. But yeah, that was a mess. The joys of employing people.
