I'm told now it might be a head gasket, but there's no white smoke or milky oil, just the temp rising then falling and hardly any heat coming out of the heater vents, any more thoughts would be greatly appreciated? Not sure if I can trust my new mechanic or not.

Head gaskets are easy to check. Put in a little money and buy a $50 tester from NAPA

what kind of tester is that, mechanic put one on the coolant and put pressure in the system and it held it so he said it wasn't a head but then another one of them said that it probably was. At a loss of what to try and fix.
