My 98 4.6 stopped blowing cold air 2 days ago & in this triple digit weather I ran to autozone & bought a charging kit. Added the freon & am enjoying cold air, hopefully it will continue to offer cold air. I do understand how you feel when your ac going out.
The shop did not tell you what was wrong. Why would they add freon without resolving the problem?
As soon as they put on their guages they should have had some idea & ran a leak test before adding freon to be sure of no leaks. Well better yet the test would have said leak or no leak if they got pressure.
How do these places stay in business???

Could be a clogged expansion valve or moisture in the system due to a bad accumulator. If water gets in the system (due to a leak ) it will freeze and block the pipes with ice.
As for repair, that particular AC is the easiest to repair I have ever seen.
My F150 compressor locked up. I had a shop evacuate the R134, I took it home, flushed it with a spray can, and replaced the compressor, the accumulator, and the expansion valve with all new parts that only cost me $ 250.00 for the parts. I then vacuumed the system with a vacuum pump and AC manifold ( they cost me $120.00 for both and I use them on all my cars for service) and added 3 cans of R 134. The whole thing was painless and took only half a day.
Go to youtube, there is a video there (search - 1996 explorer air conditioning) where a pro shows you in many videos how to to everything.
I got a quote before I did it, they quoted me $ 1,600.00. Now what am I
I know people need to make a living but $1,400 labor or 4 hours work??????
Ridiculous.

You did good Pickupsrule doing it yourself. But!!! that infamous But, eh? lolThe shop that quoted you $1400 you think that is high for a business for what took you a half of a day? Anyone can typically do most things a busienss can do, providing they have some idea of how things work, can follow direction, have proper tools, not afraid to get dirty or loose some skin on the ole knucklesThe best thing is doing it at home, you do not have to purchase state & city business license, ren t or buy a shop in a commercial district to operate out of, pay for all the proper business insurances, business taxes, commercial electricity, water, sewer, phone, advertisement, and all the tools needed for a number of different autos not just one, then because of dealing with freon, (not 100% sure, cause not in that type of business), because of handling freon they have to buy bulk, (saves some, but has an upfront cost for bulk), followed by I would imagine record keeping & disposal of old freon removed, and finally a commercial vacuum system for freon removal. That is that one part of the business, now have to add the insurances if have employees, added business taxes, SS, unemployment taxes, etc, and now the new healthcare laws add yet again, they have to offer you a warranty also for work thay did, parts they installed, time going to get these parts, & the profit, because if one is in business and does not add a profit to jobs, one surely will not be in business long, --=phew, now, not saying the $1400 quote was high or low, just explaining some of what goes into that price out of fairness. Why?Well it is like this, some know nothing about what goes into a price & assume it has to be highway robbery or that one wishes to retire in 3 jobs. In addition, any buisiness owner has 1, a standard price, 2. a price for what is called a pain in the ***** jobs, 3, a price for those that come in and thiink they know all the answers including knowing more about a business than one who has been doing it for 10 20 or 50 years even, these types of customers will be back over & over believing no one can do a job right, they will come back & complain about something that was not even touched or in the work area, yet swear this mechanic had to cause the new problem. lol, it does happen. It seems you did a good job, congrats to you. Hopefully it will last a good long while, cause depending where you live, the heat most has been having this summer, --=phew we all need good AC, driving & while home!!!
