Default cheap paint job

I have a 98 f150 and I hate the paint job it has!! the guy before me thought it would be cool to paint it black gold red and gray..... I absolutely hate it!! but I got this truck cheap so my question is how do I paint it cheap and still make it look nice??? I'm only looking to paint it one color either white or black and I definitely don't want to spend that much.... the main reason I want to do this is because the clear coat on my f150 is peeling off and it looks like ****... if anyone has any helpful info or pictures that would be awesome thanks

a cheap paint job that looks nice is an oxymoron. hate to say it to you but that's just the way it is especially these days.

prices vary region to region, shop to shop, but going by a mix of personal experience and my own research, if you can do it yourself, you might get ****ty single stage paint that'll trap dust easily and leave drip marks for a few hundred. assuming you have everything else already. a good quality multi stage primer/paint/clear that'll actually look good, closing in on or exceeding a thousand bucks - again assuming you have everything else you need. good compressor, paint gun, shelter to do it in, etc. the limco line is an example of cheap low quality paint. duplicolor makes cans of lacquer you can buy at auto parts stores etc for cheap.

to have it done for you - I have much less experience in that area but from research - from closing in on 1000 bucks for a **** job (maaco comes to mind), to several thousand for a good professional job.

I actually don't have a paint gun that's why I was wondering if there was anything in a spray can that would work??? I planned on sanding it down then putting a primer on then paint then a clear coat just something cheap and easy I know it ain't going to look like a million bucks but most anything will be better then the hideous paint it has right now!!

When you say "look nice", what do you mean?
Shiny paint like factory or?

Flat colours are easy to spray and don't run as easy.
I have seen a couple flat blue rattle can paint jobs combined with flat black bumpers that look great! But what looks good to me may not to you.

only thing in a spray can I know of is the little cans you can buy for touchup, they're between 10 and 20 bucks here....it'll probably take dozens to do the truck some are decent quality others aren't. and they are meant for touchup.

I guess you could buy canned car paint and try a roller....but trucks are meant to be spraypainted and roll jobs don't usually look great.

for what it's worth, here'd be my options to myself. if I really liked the truck and wanted her to look great, I'd fork over the money. if it was a truck I wasn't overly attached to but had a hideous paintjob I couldn't stand, I'd just sand her down, buy some regular rust paint, and do the best roll on job I could.

Why not spray on rust paint(rattle cans)? $4.50 a can and it would take around 15 cans

if available, sure. I'm just not familiar with spray rust paint let alone that cheap. I could do a roll on job for half the price all the same. spray is liable to look better however.

Like said, it just depends how much you want to put into it. I've seen some pretty good looking paint roller jobs and macco jobs. Pretty much all the good looking macco jobs were ones where the owner took the time to prep it right. I'd check out YouTube and see what you come up with. There's a lot of videos on roll on paint jobs.

A few options.

Votec with a high school. Our local HS painted my TA years back. $800 and it is still looking nice and shinny.

Buy an HVLP turbine sprayer from harbor freight. Easy to use and lays paint fairly nice.

Plasti dip that thing.

You could paint it yourself with spray can of flat black and some masking tape and sandpaper

DYI for about $25.00

Get a shop to give it a quick sand and spray $500 > $2500
Black look awesome on F150
