Are you thinking of a rack like this?

I installed this on my F350. Most manufacturers put a 200-300 lb limit on the camper top (shell, topper, canopy, cap... etc depending on what part of the country you are from). If you need more then that then you may want to look at a rack that will mount to the edge of the bed, but still accommodate your camper top.

That's pretty close to what I'm wanting. Can one of those safari style racks mount to that? I doubt I'd need more than a couple of hundred pounds rating. It would be holding light weight stuff that might not fit in the camper.

Here is a "universal" type mount for any type of rack. You have to drill a couple of holes for each mount. The bolts go all the way through with a plate on the back side. They worked fantastic and are easy to mount.

Once you have the mounts on you can put any brand of rack on there. Check out craigslist for the rack as it will be much less expensive used. Thule and Yakima are the ones I am familiar with. Both make baskets that will mount to the crossbars. Let us know what you figure out and post up some pics.

Thanks man, me too. I took the written exam for Charlotte FD yesterday, but it'll be fall before I know anything as far as if I get hired or not.
