I had the hardest time changing mine, I had a friend of mine that works for ford. He has to bring me a special tool they use, I'm not sure they name of it, but it was different than anything I had and made it 10x easier to replace them.

I just don't get what the piece of metal could be. I know what a plug looks like and I don't see how that could be anything from a plug.

I don't see what is could be either. I have looked at the picture few times and still can't seem to figure it out.

It could be carbon build up from combustion gases leaking by the threads in which case a carbon solvent {Berymans chem tool} would soften it enough to get a socket on it.
