Default Bulky Tonneau Covers? Do you like them,

It's that time of the month again (Period joke) and I'm trying to decide if I should sell my Tonneau cover. I need it only a few times a year, mostly in Winter. So far I've only used it on a couple Overlanding trips that coincided with Hunting season. I usually need more height when the truck is packed up.

What are your thoughts on big bulky Tonneau covers? Sometimes I like it, sometimes I hate it. (I already have someone willing to buy it for the price I asked for it so this is not an underhanded sales thread like we've seen so many times before, lol.)

What are your Bitches, groans, moans complaints or otherwise about this cover on my truck and your experience with them?

Ideally I'd get rid of it and but one of those fancy retractable $1,500 units but Tonneau covers aren't $1500 with of value for me.

:0)

Personally I like the hard shell tonneau. In the winter I run a full canopy to keep snow out and make it so I can still carry items around if necessary. In the summer I pull the shell and put on the hard shell tonneau. I like the looks and also the fact that with the tonneau on, the air is less inside the cab when the slider is open. If the cover is left off, I get all kinds of junk swirling up behind the cab and inside when the window is open.

These are just my opinions. I hope you decide what you need over the long haul. Good luck.

I had a hard tonneau, I didn't like it. It was nice to get stuff in the bed out of site and out of the weather, but it cut down on cargo capacity (already limited because of this silly Supercrew bed) and made it a pain to access my gear. I switched it out for a full shell and am happier. If I go back to a tonneau, it'll be for a roll-up or retractable, but like you say, that's a lot of cash for the fancy ones.

I sold it last night and bought a Fluke Thermometer. :0)

It seems like it's always a love-it/hate-it kind of thing with the cover. It wasn't quite strong enough to hold all of my gear on top but it also got in the way of the stuff if I put it down below.

I have never liked the hard covers, they seem to bulky and hard to take it on and off.

Since you sold the hard cover, you could look into a soft cover. I got mine on e-bay for ~$120. Takes 5-10 minutes to put on and 2 to take off. It is not as secure as a hard cover, but it keeps things dry on trips and can be taken off quickly if the need arises. I don't have to worry about snow, so no idea how well they would work for that.

I don't leave it on all the time. Since it is easy and takes little time to put it on, I just use it when I need it (taking trips and such).

I got a trifold one that's 250 on Amazon. If you want a trifold. I've had a riding mower in the bed before with the cover still on just shoved up to the cab. Held on with clamps so no hardware.

Honestly I have a Velcro tonneau but have been looking for a topper and will pop on a color matched one. I think I'm getting old. They are much more useful.

how? You can't get anything tall in it in the summer but then it's useful in the winter.

I've been planning on a topper since I bought the truck. That would be the perfect thing for Overlanding and camping trips. I'm just waiting on the perfect deal to come around.

Just like the Roof Rack and other stuff like that, I'd take it off till I needed it. Although, I could completely see leaving it on through the winter as well. My F.I.L. has a pulley system in his barn just for his topper.

I can only recall a couple times when stuff would have been too tall and it was always when moving people. I have an aluminum trailer or could take the topper off if necessary.

I can't count the number of times I've been like, "Dang, I either have to open the tonneau up to fit this and leave it exposed to the rain or theft, or take less stuff". It's always sacrifices.

Topper wins. Hunting, fishing, camping, weekend away with the guys all are better with a topper than tonneau.
