Bought a new truck! I've got a few questions
#21
i also have a quick question. i know this may sound dumb but ive spent about the last 3 hours searching all the 4x4 threads and why the dont work at times etc, but my question is. whats the best way to tell if my 4x4 would be working, because i know in the past threads the 4x4 light has came on the dash but yet the 4x4 isnt truly in. ill be looking for a 4x4 with the shifter on the floor. i mainly want to know because when i go look at a truck to buy it, i obviously want to make sure the 4x4 works but if im at a lot or someones driveway you cant really try to test it, and i dont want to go just by the 4x4 light on the dash and trust that 100 percent before i buy it. thanks, Zach.

Ok Zach, well the way I knew the 4x4 was locked in on my truck is a tried to turn sharply on dry pavement or any other hard surface, not recommended, but if you feel the truck resisting the turn and fighting against you, its probably in 4x4. Or if you take it for a test drive on a slippery day or without the seller, punch it in 2wd to see if the tires will spin, and then put it in 4x4 and do they same thing, this time it shouldn't spin.
I like the on the floor 4x4 too, but they can have their own problems as well, a buddy of mine has to play with his shifter to get it into 4x4, and mine I have to pull back excessively hard to get it into 4x4, and then push even harder to get it back into 2x4.
So, when looking at trucks just take your time and look it over good and make sure everything works as it should. I'm glad your surfing the forum to gain some knowledge before making a decision, thats a really smart idea.

thanks for the kind words, you have no idea how many days and nights, hours and hours, searching and searching, and thousands of threads ive been through and i am not exaggerating one bit. i love fords, i even own a 04 lincoln ls right now but im about to pay it off and sell it and get a 97 thru 00 f150 single cab 4x4 with atleast 100,000 miles or less, hence being in here. but i like to know everything I can, not only to get good deals and tear apart salesman at dealerships but just so i dont worry as much and can work on them. thats one reason why im selling my ls, it has no problems, i baby it, and it is a gorgeous car and many wonder why are you selling it then. to be honest its just not my style and i shouldnt have bought it. i bought it for more of an ego thing and to have a beautiful bad a car but as far as usefulness its not really there. im kind of in the country and i have horses so I should have just bought this truck originally, but when my 99 ford taurus finally went after 200,000 miles i just had to get the quickest thing i could get because I have 2 jobs and go to school full time. it also is very hi tech, and sensitive so I cant really work on anything on it or fix anything if it was to ever go wrong. so even though I like it, its time for me to part ways this coming summer. but i honestly cant wait to get my 4x4 f150, im always on here and reloading the page just waiting for people to write back and post. its kind of funny/sad really but hey what can I say, i love my fords. ps sry for the long post, just earlier been up all night studying for a final and just starting going on a rant. thanks for listenin, Zach.

Yeah, unfortunately they have terrible crash test ratings. That was a typical offset crash conducted by the IIHS. Go to youtube and type in "Dateline truck crash test" or something like that and there is a video by "bajabusta" about not only the F-150 but the Dodge Ram, Chevy, and Toyota.
Usually you're not going to walk away from a serious crash in one of these trucks, so take it easy and be safe.

It actually might be worth putting a cage in one of these trucks, if your worried enough about safety. It would have to be custom made though; I doubt there are any kits pre-made.

10 point cage
found a 10 point cage from SWracecars for $300, says it is for a 99-2002 f150, not sure if it would work with a supercab. Probably would have to remove the dash to install.
