My truck has 151,000 on it and at 121,000 I started using royal purple 5w-30. Can tell a big difference in the way it runs. Expensive, buy worth the extra $2.00 a quart in my opinion. Still, using r.p and changing it myself is still cheaper than taking it somewhere.

My Ford van has 199,890 miles on it and the engine uses no oil, runs like new, and has had no repairs at all. I have always changed the oil and filters but just used a good brand of regular motor oil. I have a friend that has an identical van with over 300.000 miles and it runs like new. Royal is very good stuff, but using other name brand oils won't hurt your engine either, and I can't see myself paying $12.00 a quart for oil that I dump every 3000 miles (no way am I running anything longer than that). Not putting RP down, just saying it ain't my cup of java because of the cost. Maybe it's because I get my oil and filter changed in my Crown Vic with synthetic blend and a tire rotation for $39.95.
The van is easy to get to, so I do it myself using premium oil I get on sale.

Exactly. This is why I always suggest doing used oil analysis (UOA) to determine what is working for you. There is no one "best" type of oil for every motor. Start with oil that meets the certification listed, that's about the only given it has to meet. Then choose whether you want a Group III, Group IV, etc oil. I use the groups because many think it's black and white of synthetic and conventional. Go look at an American syn vs. an Euro syn and research the differences, you'll either feel ripped off or will want it. Then look at the add packs of oils, and choose whether you like moly, ZDDP, titanium, or some combo of any of those. After doing that, UOA will tell you whether you're getting more/less wear, how the TBN is holding up, how many miles you should run your OCI, etc.

In my opinion, UOA makes for a better argument for what is a "better" oil to run than marketing and warm fuzzy feelings.

For real? I will check it out. Heck, even I can afford that. Thanks.

Looked up Royal Purple oil. According to the sources I found, they do not make the oil but buy it from a leading manufacturer and color it purple.
They might put their own additives in, but I suspected they don't manufacture it because it takes a lot of money and equipment to produce synthetic oil. Anyone know who does make it? I suspect Mobil or Shell.

I did some research, according to the sources, Royal Purple buys its oil from an oil manufacturer and colors it purple. It seems most of the claims are from people who use it, not certified scientific laboratory tests.
I am not saying it is not good oil, I am just pointing things I found out, so don't jump my case for looking into a product before I switch from what I have been using.

"SwRI did additional tests to independently determine the differences in fuel economy, emissions data and engine temperature between Royal Purple and Castrol motor oils. According to SwRI, “there was no statistically significant difference between the fuel economy, emissions data or engine temperature between the two candidate oils,” NAD said.

Following its review of the non-anecdotal evidence in the record, NAD recommended that Royal Purple discontinue the claims, “Reduces emissions up to 20 percent or more” and “Reductions in emissions of 20 percent or more” because the studies on which the claims were based were outdated and not consumer-relevant.

NAD also recommended the advertiser discontinue its unsupported claim that Royal purple motor oil is “API/ILSAC Certified.” Noting that API and ILSAC licenses and certifications have many categories with different meanings, the NAD recommended that the company discontinue its claim that its synthetic oils are “generally ‘API/ILSAC Certified.’”

In fact, no Royal Purple products are certified to current ILSAC specifications." 2009

Just putting a few of these together as food for thought and some science behind everything. I take no credit for the accuracy of any of these tests, but they were all done by certified labs. I tried to find current analysis to avoid reformulations. These are in no particular order, it's just how I found them in my travels. I know this doesn't cover all of the 5w20 out there in the world, but it gives a start. Learn what different add packs do and how they perform, pick an oil, and do UOA to see what works. All so would like to see if you have any info on the new Shell Rotella synthetic Blend? Or if you have a link for this i would appreciate it thanks Ronnie.
