Default Axle swap

I have a 9.75 rear end that I want to swap in place of my 8.8. I know you have to shorten the driveshaft but how much do you have to?

I did this swap just over a year ago, but I went from the 9.75 to the 8.8. I didn't have to change anything. The 8.8 bolted right on in place of the 9.75. I haven't had and problems since the swap.

just curious why you would go from the rock solid 9.75 to the somewhat solid 8.8?

I changed my leaking pinion seal and over torqued the pinion nut when I put it back together. The local rear end shop wanted $1200 to repair it. I found the 8.8 axle at a salvage yard for $200 so I slapped it in. It was just a money issue for me at the time and it was my family's only means of transportation. I still have the 9.75 axle sitting at my inlaws house, bit it's been sitting exposed for over a year now, so I'm pretty sure all the gears and bearings are screwed now.

So I shouldn't have to worry about the driveshaft length at all?

Possible if not it is easy to get it fixed. Shortening is cheap lengthening is a full replacement tube. Call the shop that would do it and ask them what info they would need they will explain it better than writing on here. Really simple with a tape measure.

Well I'm hoping I don't have to because my lift seemed to stretch my driveline out quite a bit. I'm hoping the new axle takes it back to stock

I didn't change the shaft up at all. Everything is working fine.

Ok thanks man. Could really use the new reared right now. Got the truck buried because I don't have limited slip
