automatic to manual??

Hey guys my tranny is gonna need replaced soon and I was thinking about swapping it out for the manual. Would it match up to my 4.6 and what all would it entail besides cutting out the holes for the clutch and shift knob? Worth it?

Tyler.172 03-07-2012 11:03 PM

honestly its not worth it man too much time and money

BigNick98 03-07-2012 11:06 PM

I just didn't know what all would entail the swap. And the only way I'd do it is if I found a great deal on a manual. I just love driving a stick lol

Anyone else have an opinion?

Cost is not worth it, as its not as strong as the Auto you currently have. Just rebuild the auto.

Bummer I really wanted to convert it lol

I did it on my truck. Not really a big deal if you have all the parts.I had a complete parts truck when I did mine youll need the transmission obviously. it will bolt up in place of the auto and youll have to cut the hole for the shifter, its stamped out so you just need to cut the piece out. The clutch pedal/brake pedal assembly will bolt in place of the brake pedal thats on there now, and the wiring for the clutch pedal switch is there, just need to plug it in. The master cylinder will bolt up and theres already a hole there for it. Other than that you'll need the clutch and flywheel, shifter and shifter boot, transmission harness and PCM unless you your not bothered by the CEL being on.

And if your worried about the transmission not being strong enough try to find one out of a super duty with the 5.4 there bell housing patterns the same and its a stronger transmission. not sure if it will fit to your cross member tho

I am looking at doing this also and this is what I have found for tranmissions in our year of vehicles. There was an R2 Med duty trans and a S5-47 ZF put out for those years. The ZF was found on the F Series Super Duty's. Hope that helps as in looking for a transmission....its gona be fun trying it myself once I have the money and find all the parts or a cheap donor truck. Junk yards would probably be a good starting point even if you have to do rebuilds on the parts you find. Hope that helps a little.
