Anyone use 87 octane?
I read that using the factory specified octane will improve your fuel mileage? I read my finances focus book and it said 87 so I ran it one tank and fuel mileage went up 2 mpg? So I read my book and it says 87 as well I have always ran 86. Anyone tried it to see if it helps?

Too Loud? Too Bad!
I read the title of this thread and thought to myself, "well yeah... the **** else would you use?" Then it occurred to me that different locations offer different octanes. lol I've personally never seen lower then 87 in my time driving, but I'm in Central NJ.

I don't really know what the octane variation it is between each state, but its usually 87,91,and 93 here. A couple Sonoco's do 87,89,91,and 93 actually. From what I heard, Its best to put in the octane in which the manual says. The truck's CPU was designed to run at that octane and using a different octane either wont make much of an improvement, if any, or maybe run a bit weird. MAYBE. Either way, what are the octanes around you anyway?

Most stations located in higher elevations sell 85 octain as regular and 87 as mid grade which seems to work ok in most NA engines run at that elevation but don't try it in a ecoboost because it doesn't know its at a higher elevation and wont run for s**t with any thing lower than 87

My octanes in Texas were regular 86 mid 87 and premium 91 same here where I moved in Colorado as well. I found it on a Firestone website under fuelonomics. It said running the highest octane will bring worse mileage than running lower or what is called for which there for a while (when I had the $) I always ran the highest octane because I thought it would yield better mileage.

87's the lowest here in Missouri. And I always run 91 not once have I ran 87 I'm this truck but the guy before me did. I notice a difference in 87 and 91. 87 makes my truck run like sh*t. 91 makes It get up and go.

Running an octane higher than the manufacturer suggests will not do anything for your performance or mileage. It will not hinder it either, it's just a waste of money. More modern engines using an extremely high compression or turbo/superchargers will require higher octane for it's anti-knock properties. Even in these vehicles you probably won't notice much difference when running lower octane because the computer will compensate by retarding the ignition timing. This will have an adverse affect on mileage and performance but because the engines nowadays are so well at compensating, they will seem to run perfectly normal.
As far as I know, this generations F-150's do not require anything above 87 octane. I wouldn't waste my time going higher than that.
